Characteristics of industry in the cities of Guangdong


  • Guangzhou
    Guangzhou is an important manufacturing base nationwide. Among the 40 categories of industries in China, Guangzhou has 34 of them. A modern industrial system with complete categories and rather strong capabilities of comprehensive supporting and R & D has been formed, which is capable of receiving the international industrial transfer. The service sector is also developing fast. There are now more than 400 specialized wholesale markets, over 15,000 wholesale trade bodies with more than 33,000 points, and over 140,000 retail points. There are also some 3,000 operating branches of financial institutions and 142 of insurance services. The pillar industries include petrochemical, automobile and electronic information.

  • Shenzhen
    Shenzhen is an important manufacturing, R & D and commodity transaction base of hi-tech products such as computer and parts, communication instruments, audio-visual products, products combining optical, machinery and electronic technologies, and bioengineering, etc. A modern and complete logistics system has been set up and developed in Shenzhen. It’s the only open city in China with airport, harbor and land ports. With the rapid development of its financial sector, a fundamental modern financial system has been established.

  • Zhuhai
    Zhuhai has complete supporting industries. Its five major sectors cover electronic and telecommunication equipment manufacturing; computer software; bioengineering, pharmacy and medical instrument manufacturing; electronic machinery and equipment manufacturing; and petrochemical industry. There is a great potential for its tourism development.

  • Shantou
    The industry has been developed to a certain scope. The six pillar sectors in agriculture include foodstuff, vegetable, poultry and animal, aquatic products, fruit tea and flowers. The major industries cover supersonic electronics, textile and garments, petrochemical, machinery, foodstuff, pharmacy, printing and packaging, toy crafts, etc.

  • Foshan
    The pillar industries include textile, electronics, plastics, ceramics, electric appliances, foodstuff, building material and machinery, etc. A cluster of new and hi-tech industries is also forming with the mainstay as electronic information, intelligent green home electric appliance, digital optical products, bioengineering and new materials, etc. The output volume of cameras in Foshan accounts for 15% of the world total, the construction ceramics takes 54% of the national total and the aluminum alloy and stainless steel accounts for 40% of the national total.

  • Shaoguan
    As the heavy industrial base of South China, Shaoguan has a solid industrial foundation, with a great number of backbone industrial enterprises. In its industrial system, the main sectors include iron and steel, mining, smelting of non-ferrous metal, power supply, machinery, electronics, textiles, building materials, foodstuff, chemical and forestry, etc. There exists rich resources agriculture and mining. The tourism resources are outstanding.

  • Heyuan
    The five pillar industries include mining, machinery manufacturing, foodstuff and beverages, textile and garments, building materials. The six leading industrial parks has just been formed. Infrastructure facilities are gradually perfecting. There are great potentials in developing the natural resources.

  • Meizhou
    Eight pillar industries have been formed, covering textile, machinery, electronics, building materials and cigarettes, etc. Future focus will be on developing the infrastructure projects like energy, transportation and communication, etc.; new and hi-tech industries, technologically advanced and export-oriented projects; electronic parts manufacturing, raw material industry and basic industry; agricultural new technology comprehensive development projects; deep processing projects with local resources; service industries such as real estate, tourism and information, etc.

  • Huizhou
    Huizhou has become an important electronic information manufacturing base in China and even in Asia. There are over 1,000 enterprises engaging in electronic information industry, and the output value is taking almost half of the gross industrial output value. The annual output of VCD players, CD cores and laser heads in Huizhou amounts to more than 36% of the total output of the world. A world-class modern chemical city is being constructed. The Shell petrochemical project, with a total investment of USD 4.3 billion, has started its construction since 3 years ago.

  • Shanwei
    The pillar industries include electronic manufacturing, textile and garments, breeding, tourism and light industry. The city is striving to establish three bases: the biggest processing industry base in the east of Guangdong; agricultural products and byproducts supply base to Hong Kong, Macao and the Pearl River Delta; recreation and tourism base.

  • Dongguan
    A modern industrial system with complete supporting industries has been formed in Dongguan, with the pillar industries as electronics, machinery, garments, foodstuff, plastics, chemical, pharmacy and building materials, etc. Computer and information industry is of special importance to Dongguan. There are more than 3,000 computer and information products processing enterprises, and 95% of the accessory parts of computers can be found produced locally. The output volume of products like computer magnetic core, main board and monitor, etc. all rank first in the world. Dongguan has become one of the main sourcing bases for computer spare parts.

  • Zhongshan
    There are more than 20 industrial parks equipped with complete infrastructure facilities in Zhongshan, and the leading ones include the Torch New and Hi-tech Development Zone, the Science and Technology Park for Private Companies, and three state-level research bases for health and pharmacy, fine chemistry and packaging and printing. There exists outstanding convergency effect in its advantages industries such as IT, electronics and electric appliances, light and textile, automobile parts and chemical, etc.

  • Jiangmen
    With rather complete industrial categories, Jiangmen is one of the important manufacturing bases in Guangdong Province. The production and sales volume of more than 20 products are ranking first in Guangdong and even in China. A number of advantageous industrial clusters has been formed, with the pillars as motorcycle and spare parts, home electric appliances, food processing, textile and garments, paper making and paper products, etc.

  • Yangjiang
    The industrial system of Yangjiang focuses on light industries. The traditional handicrafts like knives, lacquerworks and lobster sauces are well-known home and abroad. There are over 3,000 enterprises of daily knives and scissors, of which the output volume and export volume account for 60% and 80% of the national total respectively. China Kitchen Knives Center, Scissors Center and Knives Center are all located in Yangjiang. There are also new developments in other industries such as food processing, light and textile, machinery and electronics, pharmacy, chemical and building materials, etc.

  • Zhanjiang
    With the advantages of ocean and harbor, 8 pillar industries have been primarily formed as ocean petrochemical, excavation of oil and gas, electricity, paper making, processing of agricultural and sea products, feedstuff, textile, electric appliances and machinery. Four industrial bases have been set up and they are south petrochemical, processing and export of agricultural and sea products, high-class paper and small electric appliances manufacturing.

  • Maoming
    Maoming is best known for its high quality, high yield and high efficiency agriculture, and it’s the largest fruit production base and vegetable planting base (for the northern market) in China. It’s also an important energy, raw material and heavy chemical industrial base of Guangdong Province. The petrochemical industry is taking an important position in China. It has the largest crude oil processing capability in South China, with more than 400 chemical enterprises of different kinds and over 400 kinds of oil products and chemical products.

  • Zhaoqing
    The pillar industries have been primarily formed as electronic information, bio pharmacy, food and beverages, machinery instruments, processing timber, construction ceramics, chemical, textile, garments and shoe making, daily light industrial products and metal products, etc. The new and hi-tech industry and large-scale industries are also emerging. Zhaoqing is awarded as the Science and Technology Advanced City.

  • Qingyuan
    Qingyuan has set up guidance for the three industries. In the primary industry it will greatly develop characteristics agriculture and promote the industrialization of agriculture. In the secondary industry it will mainly develop hi-tech and labor-intensive industries such as bio pharmacy, energy, ceramics, building materials, electronics, electric appliances and light industries, etc. In the tertiary industry it will promote the development of tourism and real estate. The industrial supporting capabilities are being enchanced.

  • Chaozhou
    Four pillar industries have been formed as ceramics, garments, foodstuff and electronics. Chaozhou is the manufacturing base for staple export products. The level and quality of its industrial development are ever improving. Chaozhao was awarded as China’s Famous City for Wedding and Night Gowns. It’s now applying for the award of China’s Ceramic Capital.

  • Jieyang
    The industrial economy is developing fast. An industrial system has been formed with the mainstay as textile and garments, hardware and machinery, chemical, food and beverages. The output value of these industries takes over 85% of the total output value of the city. They have great development advantages, especially the textile industry.

  • Yunfu
    The six pillar industries of Yunfu include chemical, stone building materials, stainless steel products, textile and garments, processing of preserved fruits and machinery and electronics. The reserve and quality of pyrites are ranking first in the world. Yunfu is the largest market place and processing and export base for stone products in South China, with 7 categories of products. The largest stainless steel kitchen utensil production base of Guangdong is also located in Yunfu.
